Understanding Fertility Treatment

Acupuncture and Chinese herbs have been used for thousands of years to enhance and restore fertility in both men and women. Current research demonstrates the many benefits of using Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of infertility and other reproductive disorders. Whether you are trying to get pregnant naturally or undergoing assisted reproductive procedures, such as inseminations (IUI) or in-vitro fertilization (IVF), the proper application of acupuncture, herbs and nutrition has been clinically shown to greatly increase your odds of a successful pregnancy and birth. It is estimated today that 1 in 8 couples are affected by infertility. There are a number of factors that greatly influence fertility and conception some of which include age, medical history, overall health, stress levels, and environment. All of these things can affect your ability to get pregnant, and the resulting health of your baby if you do get pregnant. At Essential Points Acupuncture, our goal is to increase your chances of having a healthy, happy baby. To do that we must first focus on improving the overall health of both parents to ensure the most optimal environment for conception to happen. We will work with you to design a comprehensive treatment plan that will include acupuncture, herbs and some diet and lifestyle modifications, as well as stress reduction and mind-body approaches for total balance.

How will acupuncture affect my reproductive system?

Chinese medicine offers a natural, non-invasive approach to treating infertility by focusing on enhancing the quality of eggs, sperm, uterine lining and cervical fluid. Furthermore, acupuncture has been shown to regulate hormones and menstrual cycles, improve blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, reduce miscarriages and enhance the immune system. Sometimes this approach is sufficient for couples to conceive on their own. In other cases, it offers a valuable adjunct for couples who are about to undergo the expense and physical demands of IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Studies have shown that acupuncture significantly increases the success rate of ART while also alleviating the side-effects of treatment (Paulus et al, 2001).

How many treatments will I need?

If you are generally in good health, with no pre-existing conditions, we recommend coming in three months prior to the time you plan to start trying to conceive. It takes at least that long to positively influence the quality of follicles and/or sperm being produced. If you have a pre-existing condition, we recommend you come in at least six months prior to conception. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal is to restore your own health so that conception can occur naturally. With regard to ART, there are a number of protocols that we use depending on the history and health of the patient. If you are already beginning your IVF cycle, we typically recommend 4 to 8 treatments. If you are not yet beginning your IVF cycle, it is a good idea to have a consultation as soon as possible so that we can evaluate your specific needs. Dealing with any imbalances prior to beginning your IVF cycle can greatly increase your health and your chances of a successful IVF pregnancy.

Can you treat men?

Yes. We are now learning that up to 50% of infertility cases can be attributed to male factor. This number is much higher than once thought, yet still it is often overlooked when a couple is struggling with infertility. New information suggests that male fertility also declines with age with an increased risk of miscarriages and children born with developmental problems. Even if you are planning on doing IVF/ICSI, you should not simply rely on adequate sperm quality. Ignoring the realities of male factor could be ignoring half of the problem.

EFT (Meridian Tapping) for Infertility Treatment in Santa Rosa

Treating Emotional Factors, Stress, and Trauma:

The negative effects of stress, trauma, emotional exhaustion and relationship turmoil can have both direct and indirect impact on quality of life, and on the ability to conceive. When couples go through long periods of stress and disappointment in their attempts to conceive, fear, anxiety and worry can become a difficult barrier to overcome. Our thoughts and expectations can have a very real impact on both our mental and physical health. Past traumas, losses and unresolved emotional issues can also arise and interfere with the process, without a good way to release them from the mind and body.

EFT (Meridian Tapping) is a powerful, quick and efficient way to apply the principles of acupuncture to emotions, trauma and stress. Within just a few sessions, many past traumas, negative thought patterns and anxiety symptoms can often be put to rest, restoring peace of mind, hope and a naturally optimistic attitude. This process is also invaluable for restoring a healthy, positive connection between couples.

Stress reduction techniques, guided visualization, and meditation instruction are also offered to restore balance, relaxation and a positive state of mind.
