Common Lithium Side Effects
Every drug has side effects. Here is a list of common lithium side effects, as noted on the popular website WebMD.com:
Common side effects of lithium can include:
- Weight gain
- Impaired memory
- Poor concentration
- Mental slowness
- Hand tremor (Particularly bothersome tremors can be treated with additional medication)
- Drowsiness or tiredness
- Hair loss
- Acne
- Excessive thirst
- Increased urination
- Decreased thyroid function (which can be treated with thyroid hormone)*
- Decreased kidney function
Lithium Toxicity
Common Lithium Side Effects that are Danger Signs of Toxicity
Symptoms of lithium toxicity are potentially very dangerous and should be reported to your doctor immediately. These symptoms may include:
Diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, fever, unsteady gait, fainting, confusion, slurred speech, or rapid heart rate.
*Note that impaired thyroid function is in and of itself one of the leading medical causes of depression, anxiety and mood instability.
