Healing From The Inside Out

Sticky Thoughts, Brain Storms, and the Power of Presence

Reversing your downward spiral

Anyone who has ever struggled with depression, anxiety, worries, or periods of despair, hopeless or fear knows the slippery slope of negative thinking.

We try to avoid it, and might go along quite well for a while, keeping a positive attitude, staying grateful, staying in the flow of life... but when the negative mind grabs hold of you, it can feel like a desperate battle and a downward spiral into a very painful, or even dangerous place.

I sometimes call this the "brain storm" or the "mind storm." Eckhart Tolle calls it the "Pain Body." It's that old familiar demon that feeds on your fear and makes you forget everything positive and good about your life and yourself. And the more we fight it and hate it, the stronger it becomes. But what's the alternative?

The real truth of our earthly existence is that the body is really just energy appearing physical. The same is true of course for the entire physical universe - it is all made of energy - all vibration in constant motion - but appearing solid and stable. Our thoughts and beliefs are also a form of energy, and they have very real, and very powerful effects on the body, the mind, the world, and our experience of reality.

The interesting thing about thoughts is that they are "sticky." Thoughts attract other thoughts like them. You can easily prove this to yourself by a little introspective self-observation. Whatever thought we think, quickly leads to another thought that is similar or related, and the more you repeatedly think about any worry, fear, negative expectation, or whatever - the more you find yourself sucked into a mind storm of negative imagination.

That mind storm is a painful place to be. And when you are there, you are not present. You are not paying full attention to your body, your physical surroundings, or the people around you. You space out more, are distracted, forlorn, agitated and scattered. Even when you know it's happening, sometimes you just grow more entrenched in that state, losing your will to think positive thoughts or focus on the present moment.

Anyone who has ever been depressed or in a bad emotional period, knows that the way out usually begins with one single positive thing. It might be a phone call from an old friend. It might be someone smiling at you at the store. It might be a new book that give you a moment of inspiration and hope. It might be a moment of grace. But whatever it is, it is not nothing. There is always a trigger for a downward spiral (though not always a conscious one)... and there is always a trigger for a positive upward spiral.

The upward spiral is when one positive thought or experience leads to another, and another.

Of course most of us do not live in a constant state of bliss and peace, and life has its ups and downs. Bad moods and good moods are not a sign of weakness or instability. But the more you can be conscious and aware of the power of your thoughts, and the more you can take steps to focus and hold the positive thoughts, or the Present-Moment-Awareness, the quicker you can emerge from a painful emotional state.

Thoughts and beliefs don't just have the power to elevate or harm us internally - they also attract and repel situations, relationships and opportunities in the outer world.

That negative spiral is a vicious cycle of fear and external experiences that bring more fear and despair - the classic self-fulfilling prophesy. The best way to empower yourself is to get out of the mind storm. Internal peace brings external peace to your life.

There is always a way out of suffering.

Presence: Focusing deeply and intentionally on the felt experience of this moment, here and NOW, the breath, the body, the space around your body, the energy inside the body, the appreciation and awareness of your surroundings, beauty in nature, the taste of something good.

You can practice Presence anytime - and you should - as much as possible. It is not a mental activity, it is the practice of Being. You can assist this through meditation, but can also practice it in every activity, in work, play and rest.

My other favorite powerful method of unsticking your negative mind, is EFT Tapping. Tapping, when done effectively, IS the practice of Presence, mindfulness (non-judgmental awareness in the moment), and acceptance.... and it also engages the body and brain on the level of energy to help dissolve and let go of the obsessive negative mental/emotional storm.

We are used to avoiding, running from our pain, burying it or numbing out with TV, junk-food, drugs and alcohol or other addictions - but these things offer very short term relief at best and lead us into a deeper pit of darkness over time.

Practice kindness - especially towards yourself. Practice presence. Learn to use EFT Tapping. Be willing to relinquish your ideas and negative beliefs about yourself and the world. And don't indulge fearful thoughts or thoughts of being sick, defective or broken. You are not your thoughts about yourself. You are consciousness. Simply say to yourself "I Am."

Don't Give Up!

Every life challenge is an opportunity to awaken. There is no situation that is hopeless. Something positive, healing and transformative is possible in all circumstances, even when we can't recognize it at the time. Sometimes we forge ourselves out of the fire of suffering and loss, and it isn't until the end that we realize what a beautiful work of art has emerged within. The glory of waking up can't be experienced if you don't first accept that you are asleep.

May we all find peace. May we all know joy. May we all be liberated from fear, and released from illusions. May we all return to the Truth of our inner Light.
