Heart-Centered Living: The Cure for Suffering?

Healing From The Inside Out

Heart Centered Living:

A Cure for the Suffering Mind

Is there a difference between Unhappiness and Sadness?

Yes there is. Unhappiness is a state of lack, despair, wanting, discontent, suffering or depression. But Sadness, like any basic emotion, is a pure emotion. Quite human, and not harmful. On the contrary, when we can allow ourselves to feel a simple and pure emotion, such as sadness - I mean really feel it and allow it into the heart - it becomes a pathway to liberation.

It is only when the intellect (the thinking mind) gets involved, that we begin to suffer and become entrenched in a negative state. When we shut down, resist, avoid, deny or feel ashamed of our sadness, we create suffering. Sadness is not negative. It is perfectly natural. Sadness, when allowed, can open the heart, where it turns to compassion, selflessness, devotion, and love.

I've been practicing letting sadness pass through my heart more lately, by being mindful, taking my time to feel deeply and taking every opportunity to focus on feeling in the heart. Today I looked up an obituary and found that a recent former client of mine passed away recently. She was a vibrant and brilliant woman who had been struggling with a worn out and damaged heart - from a radiation treatment she received many years ago as a teenager. She was a conscious person, facing a conscious path towards her death, and she touched me deeply with her courage and her willingness to be open with me in her own grief. Now, as I sat at my desk, realizing that she had left this world, still remembering her bright eyes and strong spirit, tears welled up in me and I let them flow. I don't always give myself this private indulgence in sadness, but it felt good to feel it, and it felt like a way to honor her memory. I said some peace prayers for her and sat in silence for a while.

It was a small thing to do. But these opportunities seem to come with greater frequency the more I open up to them. Rather than see this as a weakness, or a sign of depression, or fragility, I feel more present, more compassionate, more connected to the suffering of others, and more courageous as a result of letting myself feel.

So many people - men especially - in our so called modern culture suppress their vulnerability and their tears. The consequence is a closed heart. A person with a closed heart is not necessarily an uncaring person, or a person without compassion. But when the heart is closed, the essence of who you are, your radiant, loving, true spirit is terribly diminished. You might still be a nice person, but the awesome greatness of your presence, your real power, your ability to project love, is cut short.

Everything is better when experienced in the heart. It's a good place to be. It's a good center from which to live.

My spiritual teacher points out that when we talk about ourselves and say "Me" or "I" - we always point to our heart. We don't point to our head. Intuitively we know where the real self resides. The essence of our Being is in the heart, not the head. When in doubt, feel into the heart, breath into the heart, visualize the Light in the heart. Always make this a higher priority that processing information through the intellect of the mind.

Often the mental fog, anxiety, racing thoughts, disorganized and overwhelmed mind takes over when we are avoiding, suppressing or neglecting the emotions and the heart. In these time of mental overwhelm, stop, breath and focus down into the physical heart. Keep your attention there. When we can allow feelings to be felt in the heart, and welcome them without judgement and resistance, emotions begin to flow and once expressed, the mind suddenly becomes calm, clear and and at peace. Thinking becomes organized and sharp. Insight comes much more easily.

Trusting the heart is not about leaping into action or figuring things out. It is simply the courage to feel and the willingness to love and accept what is.

I wish you a heart-ful week!

Don't Give Up!

Every life challenge is an opportunity to awaken. There is no situation that is hopeless. Something positive, healing and transformative is possible in all circumstances, even when we can't recognize it at the time. Sometimes we forge ourselves out of the fire of suffering and loss, and it isn't until the end that we realize what a beautiful work of art has emerged within. The glory of waking up can't be experienced if you don't first accept that you are asleep.

May we all find peace. May we all know joy. May we all be liberated from fear, and released from illusions. May we all return to the Truth of our inner Light.
