Healing From The Inside Out

Tapping the Power of Now: Meditation and Freedom from Mental Overwhelm

We are only as free as our mind allows us to be. Our outer freedom, money, possessions, opportunities, and circumstances may seem to help or hinder our freedom, but as we say, "it's an inside job."

I know about overwhelm, both from helping others in that state, and from my own experiences of being paralyzed by mental states of indecision, fear, worry and despair.

Eckhart Tolle has this to say:

"If you find your life situation unsatisfactory or even intolerable, it is only through surrendering first that you can break the unconscious resistance pattern that perpetuates that situation... it is the quality of your consciousness at this moment that is the main determinant of what kind of future you will experience, so to surrender is the most important thing you can do to bring about positive change. Any action you take is secondary. No truly positive action can arise out of an unsurrendered state of consciousness."

We know from hard experience, that when in a state of intense fear, stress or overwhelm, fighting our feelings simply intensifies them. What we resist persists. What we focus on expands. Focusing on the reality of fear by rejecting it, pushing on it or fighting against it only makes it more real and threatening.

EFT Tapping is an excellent remedy against this. Meditation is the other powerful anti-overwhelm medicine. Tapping is the quick fix, if you can get yourself to do it when you feel terrible (which is not always so easy)...while meditation, to be truly liberating, is likely to take some duration and repetition. However, with some persistence, meditation can break a cycle of emotional grid-lock like nothing else, and take you to subtle states of consciousness that melt gracefully into every area of your life with divine perfection.

There are many ways to meditate. Understand that meditation is natural. It is normal to meditate - not just some strange eccentric activity for hermits in caves. If you can breath, you can meditate. If you can be aware of yourself, then you can meditate.

Try this: Sit down. Cross legged if it is comfortable. If not, then in a chair, or lying on your back. Just keep your spine straight, shoulders relaxed, belly soft, hands folded in your lap, chin slightly tucked down.

Breath gently and slowly, letting the belly fill up and rise with the inhalation.

Watch your thoughts with the same relaxed attentiveness that you might watch clouds moving and shape-shifting in the sky on a lazy spring day. Don't judge or force anything. Don't look for answers. Avoid making plans, shopping lists or doing any intentional self-talk. If the mind starts to chatter - if you hear your voice talking in there, remind yourself that you are just sitting and meditating - not there to create more thought. Just being. Breathing.

Be gentle, easy on yourself. Realize that you are not your mind. Your mind may be a chaotic storm of craziness, or it may be funny, creative, boring or empty... but in any case, you are watching it do it's thing. You are not IT. Be the watcher. Consciousness (the Self) is not the same as the activity and content of the mind.

Do this for at least 10-15 minutes, remaining as physically still as you can. Gradually extend it to 20-30 minutes per sitting. Try once or twice a day. Morning and night are great times, but there is no bad time to meditate.

Consistency and repetition is the key to success. Do it with an easy attitude, not too serious, no big expectations. You will find your life getting calmer, easier, clearer and more manageable in all ways.

Don't Give Up!

Every life challenge is an opportunity to awaken. There is no situation that is hopeless. Something positive, healing and transformative is possible in all circumstances, even when we can't recognize it at the time. Sometimes we forge ourselves out of the fire of suffering and loss, and it isn't until the end that we realize what a beautiful work of art has emerged within. The glory of waking up can't be experienced if you don't first accept that you are asleep.

May we all find peace. May we all know joy. May we all be liberated from fear, and released from illusions. May we all return to the Truth of our inner Light.
