Healing From The Inside Out

Inspiration, Tools and Techniques for Living a Joyful Life Now

April 7th 2010 - Issue #18

“Refuse all thoughts except one: the thought 'I am'. The mind will rebel in the beginning, but with patience and perseverance it will yield and keep quiet. Once you are quiet, things will begin to happen spontaneously and quite naturally without any interference on your part."

--Nisargadatta Maharaj

    Tapping to Feel More:
What to Tap When You Just Feel Numb

Depression often feels numb, empty, flat and just plain “blah.” A sort of murky, gray, undefined mental, emotional, and physical muck. So what the heck are we supposed to do with that?

Describe it as best you can. Try journaling first – just do your best to put this inner state of nothingness into words. You can think of it as a sort of poem. Don't worry about sentence structure, don't rhyme, don't worry about spelling or punctuation or even neatness. For example:

    ....muddy pool -
    reflects nothing -
    I feel no pain -
    I feel no joy...
I drift on the surface of a deep
    murky water -
    hiding dark fears
loneliness and hurt that I can no longer feel

Then Tapping the Karate Chop point:

“Even though I feel nothing but muddy emptiness inside, I choose to accept myself anyway.”

“Even though I feel nothing, but this numb, heavy, grayness, I choose to accept my feelings.”

“Even though I don't know what I feel, I choose to feel my emotions and accept them.”

Now Tapping each point – Focusing on the Negative:

    EB: Emptiness
    SE: I don't know what I feel
UE: I can't feel my emotions
    UN: I am emotionally numb
    Ch: I don't know what I'm feeling
CB: I just feel numb and gray
UA: I feel heavy and numb
Crown: I can't feel my emotions

(Optional) Now add a Second Round or more, focusing on the positive:

EB: I choose to feel my feelings, whatever they are
SE: I choose to feel my emotions
UE: I accept all my feelings
UN: I choose to trust my emotions
Ch: It's safe to feel my feelings
CB: I choose to feel something
UA: I accept whatever feelings are inside.
Crown: I don't have to understand my feelings to feel them!

If this feels good – then it's fine to keep tapping for more rounds, and just enjoy it.

If this is bringing up some real emotion of any kind – sadness, anger, joy, fear – keep tapping a few more rounds until you feel complete. You decide what “complete” is.

You can always pause between rounds, check in with your feelings, and then do more rounds if you choose. This process is very flexible...

At long last, my eBook is done - Tapping Into Joy: Meridian Tapping and Mindfulness for Depression.

Meridian Tapping is not complicated to learn. The mechanics of the technique are very simple. Even my 7 year old daughter uses it. Nothing works 100% of the time for every person -- but I've personally had about a 95% success rate in helping my own clients with depression, by using Meridian Tapping and Mindfulness for them as the main therapeutic technique in our sessions. Using this method greatly shortens the length of treatment needed, and in most cases helps avoid the need for medication. The great thing about Meridian Tapping is that it is so versatile - it can be used effectively for anxiety, insomnia, fear, trauma - all of the "side issues" that coexist with depression and contribute to it.

Tapping Into Joy - Meridian Tapping and Mindfulness for Depression. This book is unique in it's scope, and is the only book of it's kind, that focuses completely on the subject of depression, and how to heal with Meridian Tapping/EFT and Mindfulness.

Depression is not the same for everyone. The issues underlying it can be complex and unique to each person. This 18 Chapter book covers some of the most common areas of difficulty that lead to a state of depression: Trauma, Abuse, Codependency, Fear, Indecisiveness, Repressed Anger, Shame, and more. The book gives practical instruction on using Meridian Tapping for your own healing. Even if you've never tried Tapping before, this book will lead you step by step, from the basic mechanics of the technique, to the finer points that lead to real results and breakthroughs. You'll be on your way, from the very first pages of the book.

Energy Psychology and Meridian Tapping (EFT)

"This may be the biggest breakthrough in Medicine and Psychology in the last century."

Dr. Dawson Church - Author of Genie in your Genes

Variously called "Energy Tapping," "Meridian Tapping Technique," and Emotional Freedom Techniques® or “EFT” - tapping is an amazing Energy Psychology technique that can be easily learned and self-applied for an enormous array of problems. It is excellent for depression, as well as virtually any emotional disturbance, phobia, fear, traumatic memory, negative thought, and even for many physical problems (including some chronic problems that may have been unsuccessfully treated for years using all sort of conventional and alternative methods).

By tapping on these electrochemical activation points, the nervous system is balanced, and the emotional center of the brain (the amygdala) ceases it's reactivity to the disturbing negative thought, image, memory, or whatever the case may be. Studies now show that tapping quickly reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol...

    EFT and Energy-Coaching by Phone

Meridian Tapping/EFT can be enhanced when done both face to face with a coach or therapist, as well as by phone. Once you learn the 8 major points to tap on your body (very simple), you can follow the coach's verbal cues and get wonderful results. In fact, I find that working by phone can minimize distractions and facilitate a deeper connection. Working with a therapist or coach can help you to define your core issues that need work, and help you find just the right words to describe the issue as you tap - an essential element for getting the best results.

The more I work with people by phone/Skype, the more I enjoy it - as the results are often profound and I feel as deeply connected as if I was sitting face to face with the person. I've made some wonderful connections with people all over the world who have taken advantage of this service.

Now, with Skype audio or web cam - you can even have a "face-to-face" session, just as you would if you came to my office, (and without long-distance charges).

A Few Tips on Beginning Meditation....

    • Don't get hung up on "doing it right."
    • Don't try too hard. But do "try" to be present (awake and alert).
    • If you fall asleep nothing bad will happen to you.
    • If your mind is full of chaotic, jumbled and unruly thoughts.... don't consider it a failed meditation. On the contrary, you are allowing the garbage of the mind to be cleansed.
    • Don't judge yourself or your experience
    • Self-Acceptance is Self-Love. And there is no greater force for healing and happiness in life.
    • You are NOT your thoughts. Or your emotions. Or your body. So just remind yourself that you're just watching the movies of the mind.
    • Meditation improves concentration, calmness and tranquility of mind, the health of the body, and much more. But you will realize the greatest results if you do it daily and consistently.
    • Meditation is probably the one and only thing that you can do, that doesn't involve Doing Anything. It's not the same as daydreaming or contemplating.
    • Breath is the key to infinity, truth, wisdom and total transformation of consciousness. Breath is a gift and a miracle. Breath moves life-force energy (Prana). Use it well.

Yogic Breathing Techniques to Supercharge and Balance You

Pranayama – literally “life-force control” – are powerful techniques for shifting your consciousness, purifying mind and body, and raising your energy. Pranayama is a core part of several types of Yoga.

Bhastrika Pranayam (Bellows Breath): A powerful pranayama for purifying the body and mind. It stimulates metabolism, produces heat in the body and flushes out toxins and wastes. Balances and strengthens the nervous system; Massages, stimulates and tones the digestive organs. Excellent for the lungs including asthma and other lung conditions (but do this very gently and slowly if you suffer from any lung condition).

Note: Practice only with guidance if you suffer from heart disease or high blood pressure, epilepsy, hernia, gastic ulcer or stroke. Use caution and go slowly if you have lung conditions.

      The technique:

Sit in a comfortable meditative posture, with the spine held straight and upright.

Rest the hands on the knees, facing up. Close the eyes and relax the whole body.

Left Nostril: With the right hand, close the right nostril with the thumb. Breath in and out forcefully through the left nostril 10 times. Use the abdomen (diaphragm) - not the chest - to breath rhythmically. In and out breath should be equal in length. Upper body remains still and relaxed.

After 10 respirations, take a deep breath through the left nostril. Fill up the whole chest and belly, close BOTH nostrils and hold the breath for a few seconds. Exhale through the left nostril again.

Right Nostril: Now do the same on the other side (breathing 10 times in and out through the right nostril while holding the left shut). Retain the breath as above and exhale.

Both nostrils: Breathing through both nostrils together - do 10 breaths in and out with some force, using the belly as before. Then long slow breath in and hold for a few seconds, and release.

      Breathing Rate:

Start slowly, like the normal pace of breathing, only with a little extra force. If you do this regularly, and get comfortable with it, you can start to increase the speed of respiration. Don't overdo it.

Do up to 5 rounds. Beginners should take a short rest between rounds. If you feel faint, nauseated or perspire excessively then discontinue the practice and seek guidance.

A relaxed, pleasant tingly feeling or light headedness is normal.

This is excellent to do before meditation.

      Don't Give Up!

Every life challenge is an opportunity to awaken. There is no situation that is hopeless. Something positive, healing and transformative is possible in all circumstances, even when we can't recognize it at the time. Sometimes we forge ourselves out of the fire of suffering and loss, and it isn't until the end that we realize what a beautiful work of art has emerged within. The glory of waking up can't be experienced if you don't first accept that you are asleep.

May we all find peace. May we all know joy. May we all be liberated from fear, and released from illusions. May we all return to the Truth of our inner Light.
